Summary: Bare, in its most fundamental, means laid out for all to see. That’s the joy of these three wines from three celebrated winemakers in three distinct regions. The Bare Winemakers celebrates wines made in a ‘less is more’ fashion by artisan winemakers from celebrated South Australian regions including the McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills’ and the Limestone Coast.
Vineyards: A blend of two vineyards, both located in the most sort after sub-regions of McLaren Vale namely Tatachilla and Seaview. Both sub-regions are moderated by the afternoon sea-breeze, ensuring a temperate climate and balanced ripening. The vineyards are both of similar age, planted in the late 1990’s on free-draining alluvial soils over sandy bedrock and limestone.
Winemaking: Carefully hand-harvested, destemmed and cold soaked for 5 days before being allowed to warm to start fermentation. Naturally fermented in 3 tonne open topped fermenters and gently hand plunged twice daily until sugar dryness. Then pressed off to old large oak barrels for a short maturation. After 3 months oak maturation the wine was blended, and bottled to capture the youthful characters of the recent harvest. Minimal SO2 was used in the production of this wine.
Vintage 2020: Yields were down in 2020 due to extreme heat and poor flowering but the quality was excellent across the board. Resourceful use of irrigation helped throughout vintage and later ripening was a bonus ensuring fruit was at optimum when it came to picking.
Tasting Note: Deeply coloured, vibrant youthful plum, cherry and blackberry aromas. The palate is richly concentrated, full and robust in style, primary but balanced. Styled to be a richly flavoured wine with the ability to age well. Perfect with red meat dishes such as roast lamb or an eye fillet.
