Summary: Bernard’s longstanding relationships with generational grape growers are based on mutual beliefs in viticulture, wine-making and ultimately the wines they like to share, as of course, wine is for sharing. Bernard produces small parcels of exceptional hand-crafted wines that showcase the region and the vintage from some of France’s most classic wine-making regions.
Winemaking: The barren plains of the Plan de Dieu (God’s Plain) have a winemaking heritage dating back to the fourteenth century. Deep pebble beds result in rich and powerfully flavoured wines. Organically grown fruit is hand harvested before a traditional vinification using small open fermenters and maturation in two to three year old large format oak for nine months. Bottled without fining and minimal addition of sulphides.
Vintage: 2017 followed two very fine vintages in the Rhone. Although there were many extremes during the growing season the quality overall remain high. There was a mild and dry winter with only a little rainfall meaning the vines were under a little drought stress – hence yields were down. Quality still remained high with less fruit on the Vines than normal.
Tasting Note: An expansive nose bristling with red fruits complemented by earthy notes and brown spice such as clove and nutmeg woven together by fine oak. The palate is medium bodied and shows vibrant berries, spice and fine but statuesque tannin structure A wine of brightness that shows depth and concentration and would partner well with most char-grilled red meats.
