Summary: A partnership with our Adelaide Hills and Langhorne Creek growers, Burns & Fuller is a range of contemporary and fruit driven varietal wines made by Jim Zerella, Each wine is fruit-driven and balanced with a core of fruit given complexity by a barren aged component.
Vineyards: Sourced from a combination of established, dry-grown vineyards in central South Australia and low-yielding McLaren Vale vineyards. Wines are made and matured by Jim Zerella in McLaren Vale.
Winemaking: The fruit is hand-harvested and vineyard sorted before de-stemming and cool fermentation in small two tonne open fermenters with regular hand plunging. Matured in seasoned French and American oak (30% new French) for nine months before bottling with minimal filtration and sulphur addition.
2018 Vintage: Above average rains in winter before a dry and warmer than normal summer resulted in solid vintage conditions in 2018. Summer rainfall was relatively low keeping disease pressure under control, but a couple of good falls from November through to January assisted with canopy maintenance.Temperatures were higher than average, with a number of short heatwaves across South Australia. Whites were picked in early February and the majority of reds in March. An excellent vintage overall with excellent tannins and good flavour ripeness.
Tasting Note: Nicely intense on the nose and palate with plush red and black fruits, hints of fresh leather and black olive. The palate is generous and mouth-filling driven long by fresh acidity and supple tannins. A serious wine suitable for all occasions – ready to drink now or cellar for a few years. Perfect with a lamb roast and all the trimmings.
