Summary: Originally the hunting lodge of the King of Italy, Fontanafredda was established as a wine estate in 1878 and is now 133 acres. The vineyards are located in the territories belonging to the municipalities of Serralunga dÁlba, Diano dÁlba, Barolo, Dogliani, Farigliano, Alba, Rodello and Murinsengo, at altitudes between 200 and 400 metres.
Winemaking: A traditional vinification with 15 days in stainless steel and fermented under temperature control of 28° Celcius. Two weeks on skins for optimum colour and phenolics extraction prior to malolactic fermentation.
stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature (28° C). The La Rosa is aged for 24 months in a combination of barriques and larger format oak casks prior to being blended and matured in bottle for a further 18 months before release.
Vintage: the 2005 vintage was made famous throughout Burgundy and Bordeaux but was much more understated for another of the great regions here in Barolo. It began with cool temperatures before a rain event in the first week of October. There was enough warmth and sunshine and with expert vineyard management, ripeness levels were achieved in a smaller harvest. The wines of Fontanfredda and certainly in the majority are medium weight and expressive. Typical Barolo/Nebbiolo characters shine through and as always the wines will live for years.
Tasting Notes: Today the wine is looking terrific as it reaches nearly 15 years of age. Very upfront and typical of what you see from the La Rosa vineyard. Familiar aromas and flavours for fine Barolo of cherry, florals, leather and spice. Orange peel and vanilla oak are certainly there but secondary to the nicely developing fruit flavours that still have youthfulness bursting through. Very fragrant, medium weight although with upfront flavour driven long with softening tannins and fresh regional acidity of the north-west. This wine will partner very well with an array of red meat dishes that demand a wine of substance.
