Summary: Originally the hunting lodge of the King od Sardinia and Northern Italy, Fontanafredda was established in 1878 by Emmanuele Guerrieri, Count of Mirafiore and son of the King. Fontanafredda is a truly unique estate, comprising the winery and 133 acres of vineyards, restaurants, hotel and the largest natural forest remaining in Piedmont.
Winemaking: 50% of the grapes are de-stemmed, crushed and submitted to a cold maceration for 24 hours at 10° C. The residual 50% is directly placed into the presses prior to crushing. The first juice is then separated from the skins through a gentle pressing. Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel at low temperature of 18-20° C, provided a refrigeration and decantation of the must is previously completed.
Once the fermentation is finished, the wine obtained from cryomaceration is then put together with the one obtained with traditional method and stored at 5° C in order to prevent malolactic fermentation.
2017 Vintage: the 2017 vintage will be recorded as one of the smallest in almost 60 years, down almost 15% to the year prior. A spring frost and a hail event reduced bunch size resulting in less berries. The warmth of the sun during the drought that followed on from the frost and rains relieved disease pressure and ensured much of the fruit that was harvested in better sites reached optimum flavour ripeness. The wines of this year will be bright, vibrant and for either earlier enjoyment or more medium term cellaring.
Tasting Note: This is a lifted, fragrant Arneis with palate richness balanced by freshness very typical of the producer. Floral top notes are followed by citrus and a touch of honeysuckle. Elegant and crisp, the palate displays floral and stone fruit flavours with a dry finish and lingering apple, spice and honeysuckle.
