Grape Variety: Shiraz
Winemaker: Corey Ryan
Alcohol: 14%
Summary: The wine regions of the great state of Victoria are some of Australia’s most picturesque and historical. Today we can expect to see exciting wines and evocative wine styles as common fare. Hare & Tortoise represents the steady pursuit of fine, individual, regional wines of great drinkability & interest through patience, knowledge and a hands-off approach to winemaking.
Winemaking: Shiraz fruit was handpicked and destemmed and fermented in open top fermenters for 10 days. Gentle punch downs and pump overs twice daily during fermentation to extract colour and soft tannins, then pressed to French oak barriques where it matured for a minimum of 12months.
Vintage 2022: Vintage 2022 in Heathcote, Victoria was pretty uneventful. A cooler or more mild growing season to that of many prior years but with enough sunshine hours during the ripening period to deliver very high-quality fruit. More complexed by the mild vintage and additional ripening period. The Shiraz wines particularly from 2022 look terrific.
Tasting Note: Dark plum and spice aromatics, complimented by plush cherry and raspberry fruit with structural tannins. The oak plays a supportive role and contributes hints of chocolate and tobacco leaf. A lovely fuller style of Shiraz best enjoyed with a char-grilled steak and roasted potatoes.
