Summary: Mania allows Jim Chatto to broaden his Tasmanian winemaking outside the Huon Valley, leveraging friendships built over the years to source parcels of fruit from small growers across the state. The Mania Chardonnay and Pinot Noir as a slightly more approachable expression of the Chatto style.
Vineyard: The 2019 Mania Pinot Noir is crafted using the fruit sourced from three distinct regional zones across Tasmania. An individual vineyard from each of the Huon Valley, Tamar Valley and the East Coast of Tasmania and including multiple clones have been masterfully blended contributing great nuance and detail to the wine.
Winemaking: The fruit for this wine was hand-picked and hand-sorted. Wild yeast fermented and periodically hand plunged, this is a wine showcasing fruit generosity and vibrancy supported by the gentler handling in the winery. The wine was matured for 10 months in French oak puncheons of which 10% was new.
2019 Vintage: Vintage 2019 in Tasmania was another bumper crop and a new record as the Apple Isle’s biggest vintage to date. That makes four strong years in a row. It was a warmer than average season, closest to one of the hottest on record and very dry, reducing the risk of disease. Once again it proved that Tasmania with its diverse weather kept grape growers agile and flexible to produce the best quality they could.
Tasting Note: The 2019 is a characteristic Tasmanian Pinot Noir with vital red and dark cherry fruit flavour laced with hints of cool-climate spice and nuanced minerality. The palate shows great intensity of flavour, medium bodied yet mouth-filling with fine Tasmanian acidity filling out the finish. Superb with roast duck or aged Comte cheese. Drink at its peak over the next 4 years.
