Summary: The Mirafiore winery was founded after being transformed from farming to a house of wine-making in 1878. Named in honour of Rosa Vercellana who was anointed Countess of Mirafiore by royal decree. The wines of Mirafiore are a clear and precise reflection of vintage and site delivered through very traditional wine-making practices of the north-west, being extended time on skins as well as ageing in clean, larger format oak casks. Situated in the Fontanfredda village in the heart of Serralunga d’Alba, Mirafiore has access to some of Barolo’s finest and most classic vineyards.
Vineyard: The Paiagallo vineyard, situated in the La Villa municipality of Barolo is situated high with an east, south-east aspect at between 320-370 metres above sea-level.
Winemaking: The fruit is fully destemmed and crushed prior to a temperature controlled fermentation in stainless steel at 30-32 ° C. Regular pump-overs ensued early in the winemaking process to extract colour and phenolics before slowing down to only one a day. The wine then spent a further 25 days with a submerged cap to continue flavour complexity development whilst maintaining freshness and elegance. The wine spent 1 year in partially smaller oak and partially in larger before being transferred to being fully stored in larger oak for a further 12 months. The wine was then matured for a further 18 months in bottle prior to release.
Vintage: 2010 is widely considered one of the great Barolo vintages, and most certainly of recent times. The season was characterised as even and long. Toward the end of September the night time temperatures fell to approximately 6° C whilst the days reached a maximum of 20° C. Without complication of heat stress or un-seasonal rain events the berry development was simply unhindered and long. Flavour development, fruit ripeness and phenolic ripeness all achieved with the customary tannin and acid profile ensuring these are expressive and long-lived Barolo wines.
Tasting Notes: This has a beautifully lifted nose of dark berry fruit, plum and cherry. Layered with exotic spices of cinnamon, clove and black pepper whilst the long, grippy tannin profile balanced by fine acidity mark this is a truly terrific wine from a terrific vintage. This is a medium bodied wine that is both fresh, savoury and nuanced. It will make a perfect accompaniment to many richer meat dishes.
