Summary: Bodegas Muriel lies in the outskirts of the township of Elciego and next to the Mayor River in the heights of Alavesa, the site for the most premium and sought after of vineyards. Founded in 1926 by Jose Murua Villaverde, the winery is now managed by his son Julian Murua and grandson, winemaker Javier Murua.
Winemaking: Totally de-stemmed before a long, cool fermentation with daily pump-overs to achieve colour and phenolic extraction. The wine spent a total of 15 days on skins and aged for 12 months in a combination of French and American oak, 30% of which was new. The wine was then bottled and matured for a further 12 months in the underground cellars of Muriel before release.
Vintage: 2015 was a hot and dry vintage across Spain, although the higher altitudes, cooler climate and well established vineyards saw Rioja fair the best of all Spanish regions. Light rain and cooler weather in Autumn revitalised the vines before a trouble free harvest delivering outstanding, intensely flavoured fruit.
Tasting Note: Very bright and cherry red in colour leading to ripe red fruited aromas and flavours combined with subtle vanilla, mocha and liquorice notes. The palate is fleshy and mouth-filling with soft, juicy fruit, soft acidity and supple tannins. A very easy to like Tempranillo of sophistication and terrific with food.
