Summary: Bodegas Muriel lies in the outskirts of the township of Elciego and next to the Mayor River in the heights of Alavesa, the site for the most premium and sought after of vineyards. Founded in 1926 by Jose Murua Villaverde, the winery is now managed by his son Julian Murua and grandson, winemaker Javier Murua.
Winemaking: Totally de-stemmed before a long, cool fermentation with daily hand-plunging to achieve colour and phenolic extraction. The wine spent a total of 15 days on skins. Aged for 24 months in a combination of newer and older French and American oak before bottling and a further two years maturation in the underground cellars of Muriel before release.
Vintage: 2014 was a year requiring greater management than usual. A very cool growing season with some rain events and a touch of humidity meant the threat of mildew was ever near. Across the country a warm, dry Summer ensued bringing classic ripeness to the berries with full flavour and tannin development delivering excellent quality and characterful fruit for those that showed enough skill early in the season.
Tasting Note: Classic ruby red with a terracotta hue. Lifted aromas of red berries, cola, vanilla and subtle garden herbs. Ripe fruit flavour is pulled elegantly firm with fine sandy tannins and perky, refreshing acidity. This is an expressive yet refined Tempranillo with excellent intensity offering itself as a wonderful partner to many cuisines.
