Summary: For a small winemaker, Woods Crampton has been able to achieve a lot in a small amount of time. “The straight men of the Barossa new wave” Woods Crampton makes contemporary and balanced wines, a world away from the jammy fruit bombs of the past. The range includes a ladder of old vine Barossa Shiraz, complex and thought provoking blends and alternate varietals that may be the future of the valley.
Vineyard: Sourced from the Cowham vineyard in the Light Pass sub-district. The quality and perfect sugar/acid balance of the fruit from this young vineyard shows the synergy and immense potential for the variety in the Barossa Valley.
Winemaking: Hand-picked and sorted before a cold-soak for five days at seven degrees. Split into a one and two-tonne fermenter – the one tonne 50% whole bunch and wild fermented and the two tonne around fifteen percent whole bunches laid across the bottom. Hand plunged twice daily and allowed to ferment totally dry before pressing in a very old very gentle pneumatic press and racking to old large format
oak (four hundred and eighty litre). Not racked or stirred for 15 months. Bottled without fining and minimal sulphur addition.
2015 Vintage: The 2015 vintage on the eastern slopes of the Barossa Valley was outstanding. Good soil moisture allowed the vines to weather the warm, dry summer before late rains refreshed the vines before cooler conditions allowed a long, even ripening.
Tasting Note: Our Graciano has come of age. A significantly riper and richer wine than previous years. The nose is dark berry and plums with notes of forest undergrowth and exotic spice. The palate likewise opens with blackcurrant, plums, meat and exotic spice balanced within a framework of whole bunch twang and graphite tannins. Bright acidity keeps the wine light on its feet. A wine that is equal parts Graciano and Barossa Valley in style.
